The world’s first 1-minute pathogen detection platform.

Facial recognition software for pathogens.

The VISTA Platform

INTRODUCING A
GROUND-BREAKING
TESTING TECHNOLOGY

Pictura Bio is creating the first universal testing platform to provide accurate, digital imaging-based identification of infectious disease.

Faster, simpler and more cost-effective than conventional molecular diagnostics, PIC-ID is moving infectious disease testing out of the lab and taking it anywhere it’s needed.

It combines molecular labeling, computer vision and machine learning to create a universal diagnostic platform that looks directly at a patient sample and can identify which pathogen is present in a matter of seconds.

This is not just a faster lateral flow test or respiratory infection PCR panel – it’s a fundamentally different way of identifying ALL infectious agents.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

Two patented innovations working together.

A universal fluorescent coating that sticks to anything surrounded by a lipid membrane – the biological bag that envelopes living organisms and most viruses.

Sophisticated computer software: a deep learning neural network that can analyse and classify digital microscopy images with high accuracy.

HOW IT WORKS

Every pathogen species has a unique ‘look’ when coated and visualised under a high-powered microscope.

These characteristics can’t be distinguished by the human eye, especially for tiny viruses that are little more than specks of light. However, PIC-ID can be trained to spot them.

To identify a pathogen, a patient sample (such as a throat swab) is mixed with the coating reagent and put through VISTA (Instant Recognition and Identification System).

The software analyses the resulting digital image and compares it against an extensive, AI trained image database network to identify which pathogen is present – all in a matter of seconds.

Transforming diagnostics

The Pictura Bio team is focusing on packaging the PIC-ID technology into a simple desktop ‘lab in a box’, named VISTA (Instant Recognition Identification System) around the size of a domestic microwave, comprising a single-purpose high-powered fluorescent microscope and image capture and processing technology.

This technology has reached proof of concept and is protected by patents. Pictura Bio is in the process of building the technology to scale this product for wider availability & adoption in the medical community.

Today, PIC-ID is trained to spot enveloped viruses from respiratory samples, but the future holds boundless potential for how pathogens in samples are recognised.

How Pictura Bio’s 1-minute diagnostics can change how we treat disease

TRANSFORMING DIAGNOSTICS

Testing will be facilitated by doctors, nurses and anyone with medical training on site, removing costly and often long wait times in off site laboratories

TACKLING AMR

Use of broad-spectrum antibiotics has been the go-to option for health practitioners caring for patients with life-threatening infections. With VISTA, an accurate and near-instant diagnosis will cut the need for prescriptions dramatically

LIMITING COMMUNITY EXPOSURE

On-site diagnostics will help medical practitioners quickly triage and isolate the patient limiting the risk of further community infection and to implement immediate treatment

REDUCING MEDICAL WASTE

No need for costly combinations of reagents. Pictura Bio’s VISTA cartridges are the only reagents required to facilitate hundreds of tests, drastically reducing the volume of plastic and chemicals to deliver a test

TRENDS & CHANGES OVER TIME

Our technology will be able to visualise different pathogens in areas of the communities where VISTA devices are present

INSTANT TEST ROLL-OUTS

Our connected technology allows us to roll out new tests for new or adapted pathogens as quickly as a software update without the need for creating new infrastructure, distributing new reagents, building laboratories and test training.
